In Roman times, the saying “All roads lead to Rome” was a literal truth. Today, however, most roads lead to dependency. Not long ago, I realized I was trapped. Not in a prison of iron, but in a cage of my own making.

Financially, I was bound. Physically, my condition was a shadow of what it should have been. Mentally, I was more dependent on the approval of others than on my own compass. I used to think that “becoming independent” was selfish. I was wrong.

The Insight
I learned that you can only be of true value to others when you are independent and strong yourself. You cannot pull someone out of a pit if you are still in it yourself. Independence is not an escape from society; it is building the strength to participate in that society on your own terms.
